Bayon, During the reign of Hindu restorationist monarch Jayavarman VIII,
(His rule lasted from 1243 till 1295, when he abdicated)
the central 3.6 m tall statue of the Buddha
was removed from the sanctuary and smashed to pieces.
After being recovered in 1933 from the bottom of a well,
it was pieced back together, and is now on display
in a small pavilion at Angkor.
It was during the reign of Jayavarman VIII
that the Mongol forces under the command of
Kublai Khan attacked the Angkor empire in 1283.
Bayon experenced numerous alterations by
subsequent Hindu and Theravada Buddhist kings
in accordance with their own religious preferences
